Sources and citations: what a result needs you to check
Opening a source is the start of verification: also check its revision, location and surrounding conditions. This independent fictional example explains the sequence; it is not evidence that public search is currently available.
Three different checks
- Retrieval: find a related passage within the selected corpus. A keyword hit is not answer accuracy.
- Source location: use document, revision, chunk and locator information to return to the original.
- Answer support: if local generation is ready, check conditions, exceptions and negation separately. This public demo has no answer-generation feature.
A fictional question: can archiving be reversed?
Suppose the source says that archiving hides a record from the list, and reversal restores its visibility but does not restore deleted originals. Reading only the first statement could turn “visible again” into a mistaken claim about deleted-file recovery.
Inspect four things in the source
| Check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Document | It answers the question in the selected scope, rather than merely sharing a similar title |
| Revision | The referenced revision is still valid, not replaced, removed or revoked |
| Location | Inspect the locator actually available: a page, heading or chunk position when supported. Not every format provides the same location detail |
| Context | Read conditions, exceptions, negation and neighbouring paragraphs, not just the matching term |
The illustration's demo-v1 and section 2 are fictional labels. Real revision and locator fields come from parsing and retrieval. Do not invent a page number or substitute a search rank for an original location.
No result, weak evidence or an invalid source
- No result: check scope, terms, parsing and index readiness. Report no evidence in the current scope rather than claiming no answer exists anywhere.
- A merely related passage: narrow the question or provide a clear source. General model knowledge is not a statement in the user's files.
- Changed, deleted or unreadable originals: old evidence becomes invalid. Check the current original and access before deciding to parse and index it again; do not silently resurrect an earlier version.
- Unavailable models: inspect the local keyword and optional-generation states separately. Public search remains disabled while official examples are unapproved.
A small verification record
Use an independent document you have rights to process and retain the query, expected passage, returned source, revision and limits. A legal citation number establishes a mapping, not support for every claim. Recheck important conclusions against the original and separate source statements from inference.
Read Windows setup and licensing for local preparation, or check public-demo readiness. The demo does not register users, accept uploads or ingest personal libraries.
